How we came to be...

The Nel family have been making an honest living on the farm Vanrhynshoek for nearly 100 years (1925-2020) The old farmhouse was recently renovated and Handvol Gruis Guesthouse was born – keeping its original farmhouse look and feel in tact. The house has a lovely open stoep as well as three fireplaces and a beautiful old aga stove that we still use when it is cold. The 4 bedrooms, two living rooms and kitchen are spacious, the décor simple and stylish. The house sleeps 9 people. Extra matrasses can be provided.

Johan & Ronelle Nel

We are the 4th generation on the farm. We are passionate about the Karoo, farming, and family as well as meeting new people! Ronelle is an Occupational Therapist who works part time for a Community Upliftment NGO, other than that she loves people and manages the Guesthouse and its reservations. Johan is a full time sheep and lucern farmer. He is the handy- and go-to-man. We have three sons Sebastian, Benjamin and Ruben.

Basie & Lourine Nel

They are the 3rd generation on the farm. They love farmlife, their grandchildren and socializing. Lourine loves gardening and has green fingers even in the harsh karoo climate, she is responsible for the garden around the Guesthouse. Her home baked rusks are to die for!

Jakob

He has been working on Vanrhynshoek for nearly 30 years. He keeps the yard neat and tidy and helps with the agastove, wood and gas. He is a handy tyre-fixer!!

Stella and Betjie

Stella is the fairy who makes sure the house is sparkling clean. Betjie does the washing and ironing and does a wonderful job! She also bakes delicious roosterkoeke.
